ANITA (Atmosperic-like Neutrons from thIck TArget) neutron beam facility

The ANITA facility provided a neutron beam with atmospheric-like spectrum (”white”, ”spallation”, cosmic-ray induced neutrons), primarily for studies of neutron-induced single-event effects (SEE) in electronic components and systems, as well as for Soft Error Rate (SER) testing.

The spectral neutron flux versus energy for the standard ANITA neutron field, in comparison with other facilities and the reference terrestrial neutron flux (JESD89A)


  • Neutron spectrum: atmospheric-like up to ≈150 MeV
  • Neutron flux: ≥106 cm-2 s-1 *, corresponding to the acceleration factor of ≈300 million
  • User control of the neutron flux within the range 5*100 - 1*106 cm-2 s-1
  • Neutron beam spot size: variable, 1 - 120 cm**
  • Neutron beam spot shape: circular or square (other shapes upon request)
  • Time required to change the beam spot size: ≤1 hour
  • Beam spot uniformity: ±5%
  • Thermal neutron flux: <1% of the integrated flux
  • Beam axis height above the floor: 150 cm
  • Area available for users at the beam line: 15 m long, 3 m wide
  • Continuous time-stamped logging of neutron flux monitors´ readings

ANITA-CUP, new user position with extra high neutron flux

A new irradiation position, CUP (Close User Position) were constructed, characterized, and put into operation at the ANITA facility for accelerated testing of components and systems for single event effects. The energy-integrated neutron flux above 10 MeV, amounting to more than 107 cm-2 · s-1, was the highest among the facilities with atmospheric-like spectra.
